Saving Money on Electric

Okay my dear readers I'm coming to you for help. Last month my electric bill shot through the roof, for me it was HUGE at around $200. I was shocked, but apparently the summer heat really caused us to use a lot more electricity than normal. This got me thinking, how much energy/electric we use. I called up the company and started asking questions. Want some tips?

Tips to Cutting down that Bill:
- Keep the AC on around 79 (don't turn it off and on, that runs it higher)
- unplug everything, if you aren't using it you are still using electricity (I had no clue)
- Leaving ceiling fans on is actually a good thing.
- Use the washer and dryer during peak hours (6-8a.m. and 6-8p.m.)
- Use your dishwasher less (I'm guilty of using mine)
- Using the lights? If you are during the day think about opening your curtains to let natural light in.

Got any other tips? I'd love to hear them.

Comments:
-Make sure all windows and doors close and seal tightly, if not, get some rubber stripping and run it around any cracks you see.
-Block out any strong daylight by keeping blinds and curtains closed during the daylight hours. The sun glaring through the windows causes the rooms to heat up rather quickly, causing your AC to keep running to keep your house at a constant 70 degrees.
-Buy or make heavy dark colored drapes to keep even more of that strong day sun out.
-Turn off every light and fan in any room you are not going back into within 5 minutes.
-Hang wet clean clothes out to dry instead of using the dryer.
-Wash dishes by hand.
-Use fans to help circulate the air in the rooms you are in instead of depending solely on the AC. A fan can actually cool you down by another 10 degrees.

I know I have more tips, and when I think of them, I'll come back and post some more.

I wake up, open the windows, and don't close them until it's over 80inside. I keep fans going, because the moving air feels cooler. They are cheaper than the ac. I do use an ac, but I am in a downstairs unit and my building is well-insulated. I turn the air off at night and point a fan at us while we sleep. I realize that fans are dangerous with your little ones, so I'd put them up on a shelf, or some other high spot.

Good luck.
